O-Level English Tuition in Singapore

O-Level English is four papers, and two of them are worth the same. Most students plateau somewhere in Paper 1 or Paper 2. We find where, then teach to it.

Acer Academy runs O-Level English tuition for Secondary 1 to Secondary 4 students in Singapore, covering all four papers of the English Language syllabus: Writing, Comprehension, Listening and Oral Communication. From 2027 the Singapore-Cambridge SEC replaces the O-Level, and students sit English at G1, G2 or G3 — the content at each level mirrors the old streams. Students at different levels learn in the same class, with materials matched to each student's paper. Lessons use the Round Robin Method, where the teacher moves between students during the lesson rather than delivering one explanation to the room. The problem

Why take O-Level English tuition?

By Secondary 3, most students have been writing English for ten years, and the marks have usually settled into a band. That plateau is the thing worth looking at. It rarely comes from not knowing English. More often it comes from writing the same essay at the same level, and being marked on things nobody has quite named out loud.

The O-Level paper rewards precision more than fluency. Situational Writing is marked on register and purpose, so a well-written text in the wrong voice still loses marks. Continuous Writing is looking for a controlled argument rather than a longer story. Comprehension asks for inference, and for summary that genuinely condenses. All of these are specific and learnable — they just tend not to get taught one at a time.

That's difficult in a class working through one worksheet, because two students in the same room can plateau for quite different reasons. One writes fluently but can't structure an argument; another structures well but writes flatly. The same lesson doesn't help both.

Paper 1 — Writing

What it tests

Three sections. Editing (10 marks) on a text of up to 250 words. Situational Writing (30 marks), 250–350 words from a given situation with a visual text. Continuous Writing (30 marks), 350–500 words on one of four topics.

What we do in class

Editing is the cheapest ten marks on the paper and the most commonly rushed. Situational Writing is where fluent students lose most — it is marked on whether the register fits the reader, and that is a thing you can be taught. The teacher works the room: register with one, structure with another, a rewrite for a third.

Paper 2 — Comprehension

What it tests

Three sections. Texts 3 and 4 together run to about 1200 words. Worth the same 35% as Writing on fifty marks rather than seventy, so each mark counts for more.

What we do in class

Summary is the section that separates grades, because it requires cutting rather than covering. We work component by component rather than setting whole papers and marking them — a student losing marks on inference doesn't need more passages, they need that one thing named.

What it tests

Two sections. Section A (22 marks) across a range of audio texts; Section B (8 marks) a note-taking task on an informational text.

What we do in class

Ten percent is worth having, and the note-taking task is a technique that rewards a bit of practice.

Paper 4 — Oral Communication

What it tests

Planned Response (15 marks) and Spoken Interaction (15 marks). There is no Reading Aloud. A student who did the PSLE oral will expect one, and it is not there.

What we do in class

Twenty percent, on two skills that reward preparation. Planned Response is a structured answer built in ten minutes; Spoken Interaction is a conversation you cannot rehearse. We practise them separately, in the room, not as a mock the week before.

    Competent everywhere, outstanding nowhere. Usually two or three specific components, not the whole subject.

    Fluent, and losing marks on register, purpose and audience rather than on language.

    Sitting the same skills at a different pace, in the same room, with materials matched to their paper.

  • The Secondary 3 student thinking about the O-Level year

    S3 is when a plateau is still cheap to break. S4 is spent revising it.

How we teach it

We find the plateau first
The first lesson isn't a lesson. We work out which paper and which component is holding the grade, because at this level "improve your English" isn't much to go on.
The Round Robin Method™
One class, one teacher, moving between students. A different explanation here, a harder text there, a rewrite for the student who needs one. It is also what lets students sitting English at different levels work in the same room — the teacher is already teaching to the individual, not to the level.
We return, adjust, reinforce
A rewrite happens in the same lesson, not next week, with the teacher having changed the approach in between.

Common questions

It does. They'll be in the same room, working with materials matched to their own paper. Because the Round Robin Method has the teacher working with students one at a time through the lesson, the class doesn't have to move at any single level's pace — which is what makes it work rather than something we have to work around.

It depends on when they started secondary school. Students who entered Secondary 1 in 2023 or earlier sit the O-Level. Students who entered in 2024 — currently Secondary 3 — are the first cohort to sit the Singapore-Cambridge SEC, in 2027. The subject content is the same either way; what changes is the certificate and how the levels are named.

It has. Reading Aloud is no longer part of it. Paper 4 is now a Planned Response and a Spoken Interaction, worth fifteen marks each, both based on a video clip shown on screen. It's an easy one to miss, since students who remember the PSLE oral often prepare for a passage that won't come.

Papers 1 and 2 are worth 35% each, so between them they carry about seventy percent of the grade. Which of the two needs the attention really depends on your child, and that's what the first lesson is for.

Secondary 3, if you have the choice. A plateau is much easier to shift with a year in hand than in the middle of the O-Level year, when most of the time goes on revision.

Within secondary, yes — an S1 and an S4 may be in the same room. It works because the teacher isn't delivering one lesson to the class: they move between students, and each child works on material matched to their own level. Primary and secondary classes are always separate.
