PSLE English Tuition in Singapore

PSLE English is four papers, and most children lose marks in one of them. We find out which, then teach to that — rather than moving a whole class through everything at the same speed.

Acer Academy runs PSLE English tuition for Primary 1 to Primary 6 students in Singapore. Classes cover all four PSLE English papers: Writing, Language Use and Comprehension, Listening Comprehension, and Oral Communication. Lessons use the Round Robin Method, where the teacher moves between students during the lesson rather than delivering one explanation to the whole room, so each child is taught at the point they are stuck. The problem

Why take PSLE English tuition?

English is the subject parents notice last. A child who reads fluently and speaks confidently can still lose fifteen marks a paper to comprehension inference, or write a composition that says nothing in four hundred well-spelled words. The gap doesn't look like a gap until the marks arrive.

By P5, the paper stops rewarding effort and starts rewarding technique. Cloze passages test grammar the child can use but can't name. Comprehension asks for evidence, not opinion. Oral marks conversation, not vocabulary. These are learnable — but only if someone identifies which one is costing your child marks, and works on that one.

Most classes can't do that, because they move at one speed through one worksheet. A child who is strong at comprehension and weak at situational writing sits through both at the same pace, and improves at neither.

Four papers, and they are not worth the same. Start with the shape of the marks, then read what each one tests and what we do about it.

Paper 1 — Writing

What it tests

Situational Writing (14 marks) and Continuous Writing (36 marks). The situational task is marked on whether the child wrote for the right purpose, audience and context — not on how nicely it reads. Continuous Writing asks for at least 150 words on one of three pictures, and rewards a story that goes somewhere in controlled language.

What we do in class

Composition is where the Round Robin matters most, because two children in the same class fail it for opposite reasons. One has ideas and no structure; the other has structure and nothing to say. A worksheet can't fix both. The teacher works the room — planning with one, tightening language with another, pushing a third past a safe ending.

Paper 2 — Language Use and Comprehension

What it tests

The heaviest paper, and the one that decides most grades. Booklet A is multiple-choice: grammar, vocabulary, vocabulary cloze and visual text. Booklet B is open-ended: grammar cloze, editing, comprehension cloze, synthesis and transformation, and comprehension. 25 multiple-choice questions, 50 open-ended.

What we do in class

Losing marks in Paper 2 is never "weak English" — it's one component. A child can be sound on grammar cloze and lose eight marks a paper to synthesis. We find which component is bleeding marks and work on that, rather than moving the whole class through everything at one speed.

Paper 3 — Listening Comprehension

What it tests

Twenty multiple-choice questions on spoken texts, tested at literal, inferential and evaluative levels. The first seven use graphics, and each text is read twice. The smallest paper, and the one most children never practise.

What we do in class

Ten percent is a whole AL band. It's cheap to improve and almost free to ignore, which is why we don't.

Paper 4 — Oral Communication

What it tests

Reading Aloud (15 marks) and a Stimulus-Based Conversation on one photo (25 marks). The two are not thematically linked. Reading Aloud is marked on whether the child reads fluently for the purpose, audience and context of a given situation. The conversation is on a photograph the child has five minutes to prepare from.

What we do in class

Twenty percent, and two separate skills. A fluent reader can still freeze on the photograph; a confident talker can still read the passage in the wrong register. We practise them as the paper sets them — separately — and we do it in the room, not as a once-a-term mock.

Who is this for?

  • The child who reads well but doesn't score

    Fluent, articulate, and stuck at AL3. Usually a technique problem, not a language one.

  • The child losing marks they can't explain

    Comes home with a mark and no idea why. Needs a teacher who can name the specific thing going wrong.

  • The child who freezes at composition

    Can tell you a story out loud and cannot start one on paper. Structure, not imagination.

  • The P4 parent thinking ahead

    Two years before PSLE is when technique is cheap to build and expensive to retrofit.

The first lesson isn't a lesson. We find out which paper is costing your child marks, because "weak at English" isn't something anyone can teach against.
The Round Robin Method™
A teacher doesn't deliver one lesson to the room. They move between students — a different explanation here, a simpler step there, an extension for the child who's ready. The lesson keeps moving, but never blindly.
We return, adjust, reinforce
A child who didn't get it the first time doesn't wait a week. The teacher comes back within the same lesson, having changed the approach.

Before you book

Common questions

Primary 4 is when technique is cheap to build and expensive to retrofit. Starting in Primary 5 still works — the first lesson is a diagnostic, so we find which of the four papers is costing marks before we teach against a vague "weak at English". Younger children are welcome too — P1 to P6 share the same primary classes, and a P1 to P3 child works on lower-primary material rather than PSLE papers.

Four papers, 200 marks. Paper 1 Writing (1 hour 10 minutes, 50 marks, 25%): situational and continuous writing. Paper 2 Language Use and Comprehension (1 hour 50 minutes, 90 marks, 45%): Booklet A multiple-choice and Booklet B open-ended. Paper 3 Listening Comprehension (about 35 minutes, 20 marks, 10%). Paper 4 Oral Communication (5 minutes' preparation and about 5 minutes' examination, 40 marks, 20%): reading aloud and a photo-stimulus conversation, not thematically linked. That is the format examined in 2026, from SEAB syllabus 0001.

With the Round Robin Method™. The teacher moves between students during the lesson — a different explanation here, a simpler step there — rather than delivering one walkthrough to the whole room. A child who didn't get it the first time is seen again in the same lesson, not next week.

Within primary, yes — a P2 and a P5 may well be in the same room. It works because the teacher isn't delivering one lesson to the class: they move between students, and each child works on material matched to their own level. Primary and secondary classes are always separate.
