Pure or Combined, one science or three — Secondary Science covers a lot of ground. We teach it in one class, with material matched to the papers your child is actually sitting.
Acer Academy runs O-Level Science tuition for Secondary 1 to Secondary 4 students in Singapore, covering Pure Physics, Chemistry and Biology as well as Combined Science. Pure sciences are assessed over three papers — Paper 1 multiple choice (30%), Paper 2 structured (50%) and Paper 3 practical (20%). Combined Science has five papers of which a student sits four, with the practical worth 15%. Students sitting different papers learn in the same class, with material matched to each student. Classes run with a maximum of one teacher to every eight students, and larger classes are staffed with more teachers rather than a thinner ratio. Lessons use the Round Robin Method, where the teacher moves between students during the lesson rather than delivering one explanation to the room.

The problem
Secondary Science asks for something different from Primary. It isn't only whether your child knows the topic — it's whether they can apply it to a situation they haven't seen, explain their reasoning, and handle apparatus under time pressure. Those are three quite separate skills, and a child can be comfortable with one and not the others.
The practical paper is where this shows most. It's worth a fifth of a Pure science grade, and it rewards care and method as much as knowledge — reading an instrument properly, presenting results clearly, saying what the data actually shows. Many students meet it seriously for the first time only in the year they sit it.
It's also the stage where students diverge. One takes three Pure sciences, another takes Combined; one is confident in Chemistry and finding Physics harder. A class moving through one worksheet can't meet all of that, which is why ours doesn't try to.
The exam
Two routes, and which one your child takes usually isn't a free choice — Pure combinations tend to carry prerequisites. Below is what each involves.

Forty compulsory multiple-choice questions.
Thirty percent on forty questions means each one carries real weight, and this is the paper where a shaky concept shows up first.
Pure

Section A is 70 marks of compulsory questions, ending with a data-based question. Section B is 10 marks — two questions, of which your child answers one.
Half the grade. Most marks lost here aren't lost on knowledge but on reasoning that stayed in your child's head rather than reaching the page.
Pure

1 h 50 min · 40 marks
A laboratory examination. Physics runs in two 55-minute sections; Chemistry and Biology are a small number of compulsory questions without sections. Planning carries 15% of the paper, with measurement, presenting data and drawing conclusions making up the rest.
A fifth of the grade, and usually the least-practised paper. It rewards method — reading an instrument to the right precision, labelling a table properly, saying what the results actually show.

Forty questions, covering both of your child's sciences roughly equally.
Worth 20% here against 30% in Pure, so the structured papers matter more in Combined than parents often expect.

Paper 2 is Physics, Paper 3 Chemistry, Paper 4 Biology. Your child sits the two that match their combination — so a Chemistry and Biology student takes Papers 3 and 4 and never sees Paper 2. Each has a compulsory Section A of 55 marks and a Section B of 10, where one of two questions is answered.
Together these carry 65% of the grade. This is where the work is.

One or two compulsory questions on each of the two sciences.
Fifteen percent rather than Pure's twenty, but the same techniques earn it — and it's the paper students most often meet properly for the first time in the year they sit it.
Fit
Perfectly common, and much easier to address when the teacher can work with them individually rather than at the pace of the room.
The practical is worth 20% of a Pure grade. It's often the least practised paper and one of the most improvable.

It's usually less of a free choice than parents expect — Pure combinations tend to carry prerequisites, so schools offer them based on Sec 1 and 2 results. Where there is a choice, Pure gives a separate grade for each science and goes deeper; Combined covers two sciences for one grade at roughly the workload of one subject, and still leaves H2 Science open at A-Level. Either way your child is in the same class here, working on the papers they're actually sitting.
Yes. Because the teacher works with students individually through the lesson, your child can bring whichever science needs the attention that week rather than following a fixed rotation.

Within secondary, yes — an S1 and an S4 may be in the same room. It works because the teacher isn't delivering one lesson to the class: they move between students, and each child works on material matched to their own level. Primary and secondary classes are always separate.
